this morning spoke volumes as the nation and newtown remember what happened one week ago today. only rain drops heard during this moment. firefighters there in newtown, paying tribute to 20 young children, 6, 7 years of age and seven adults gunned down for reasons we may never know. the reflections began at 9:30 a.m. eastern time, that is the precise time that first call came in. at least 29 states held a moment of silence, put flags at half-staff, even parts of the internet went silent this morning. video gamers put down their consoles in unity and bells across connecticut state sounded for each killed at sandy hook elementary. to put the economy at risk because they can't bridge that gap. and he even used the newtown massacre as a political wedge if you will, when questioned about the stalled talks. >> and when you think about what we've gone through over the last couple of months, a devastating hurricane, and now one of the worst tragedies in our memory, the country deserves folks to be willing to compromise on behalf of the greater good. >> back in 2011, both sides were able to blame each other for the failure to achieve a quote/unquote grand bargain. yet history is repeating itself. the white house believes boehner is walking away. t they are accusing the white house of not reopening talks. they say they are waiting for a phone call. the big reason boehner walked away to folk auns plan b, we're told and white house -- was the white house's refusal to lower a revenue target number from $1.2 trillion. supposedly if the white house got closer to $1 trillion, even $1.1 trillion and included one to one spending cuts before counting interest, that boehner would sign off on that deal. folks, if we're really th
for tougher gun controls getting louder in the wake of course of newtown. we saw that on the sunday morning talk shows yesterday. among many other places in the wake of this tragedy, but advocates for tougher laws are running head first into gun rights lawmakers as well as the national rifle association. that's not stopping lawmakers like senator dianne feinstein of california who is vowing to renew legislation to ban certain weapons and limit the number of bullets a magazine can hold. we could see movement on this legislation as soon as next month. she has a lot of support among fellow democrats. >> trying to prevent shootings in schools without talking about guns is like trying to prevent lung cancer without talking about cigarettes. >> also on meet the press yesterday, the c.e.o. of the nra dismissed calls for an assault weapons ban or limiting ammunition. instead he is pushing for more police officers in schools. >> if it's crazy to call for putting police and armed security in our school to protect our children, then call me crazy. i'll tell you what the american people -- i think the
will announce a task force led by vice president biden to develop a policy response to the newtown, connecticut shooting. the president is not expected to make any policy decisions but lay out a path forward on a process to come up with some policy proposals. on sunday though he did promise in newtown that he would use whatever power this office holds to prevent future tragedies. yesterday white house spokesman jay carney said that could include reexamining some gun laws. carney said the president supports senator dianne feinstein's attempt to revive the assault weapons ban as well as a ban on high-capacity magazines. he also supports closing the so-called gun show loophole. any effort though at new restrictions on guns will kick off a new fight in washington. the nra spent $18.6 million supporting and opposing candidates during the 2012 cycle. according to the sun life found case, 51% of the numbers of the new congress have received funding from the national rifle association's political action committee at some point in their political careers. the nra is known for staying silent, running out
